Nigeria Submits Bid to Host First-Ever Formula 1 Grand Prix in Abuja

Nigeria has officially launched a bid to host a Formula 1 Grand Prix in Abuja, a landmark move that could see the world’s premier motorsport return to the African continent for the first time since 1993.

The Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Mallam Shehu Dikko, announced the development, revealing that the proposal has been submitted to the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) and Formula 1 Management through Opus Racing Promotions — Nigeria’s official representative in the negotiations.

“This bid is more than just about hosting a race. It is about showcasing Nigeria’s capacity, creativity, and commitment to developing world-class sporting infrastructure,” Dikko said. “It is a landmark project that will redefine Nigeria’s place in global motorsport and sports tourism.”

The Abuja Grand Prix bid is backed by top government officials and private sector stakeholders. Invitations have reportedly been extended to F1 Chief Executive Officer Stefano Domenicali, seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton, and Tilke Engineers & Architects — the firm behind most modern F1 circuits — for a site inspection and stakeholder meetings.

This move follows Nigeria’s successful hosting of the inaugural E1 Lagos GP in March, the first-ever all-electric powerboat race held in Africa. Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu described the event as a testament to Nigeria’s commitment to innovation and clean energy.

Nigeria is also vying to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, with President Bola Tinubu calling for the centenary edition to be awarded to Nigeria — potentially making it the first African nation to host the Games
