Nigeria wrapped up the 2025 International Para Badminton Championship in Umuahia, Abia State, with an impressive haul of three gold, four silver, and nine bronze medals, showcasing the nation’s growing strength in para sports.
Abia’s own Jeremiah Nnanna clinched a gold medal, while Paralympic bronze medallist Eniola Bolaji triumphed in the women’s singles SL3, defeating Cameroon’s Danyele Mouafo. Another Nigerian, Mary Nathan, added to the gold tally by defeating Brazil’s Juscileia Silva in the women’s singles WH1 category.
Brazil emerged overall champions with seven gold, three silver, and five bronze medals. India placed second with six gold, five silver, and 14 bronze, while Peru came third with six gold, three silver, and two bronze.
The tournament, the first of its kind on West African soil, featured 114 athletes from 13 countries competing in 19 events.
Speaking at the closing ceremony and the flag-off of the All-African Para Badminton Championships, Governor Alex Otti approved that Abia would host the international event again next year, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to inclusion.
“For us in Abia, our mantra is inclusion,” Otti said. “We have no excuse not to provide opportunities for people with physical challenges. Even in our public transport system, we are making provisions for wheelchair users so they can enjoy equal comfort.”
The governor also announced a $50,000 cash award for all 144 participating athletes, praising their resilience and sportsmanship.
Jeff Shingoli, Chief Executive Officer and representative of the Badminton World Federation, commended Nigeria’s hospitality and the success of the tournament, saying, “Abia State and Nigeria have shown outstanding commitment by welcoming the world’s best. This environment ensures the dreams of our para badminton athletes thrive.”
In his remarks, Francis Orbih, President of the Badminton Federation of Nigeria, thanked Governor Otti for sponsoring the competition and urged athletes to uphold the spirit of unity and excellence.
Abia’s Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Sir Nwaobilor Ananaba, lauded the event as a testament to the governor’s vision and support for sports. “This championship has not only been about medals or competition—it’s about redefining possibilities and proving that abilities know no boundaries,” he stated.
Dignitaries at the event included Deputy Governor Ikechukwu Emetu, members of the State Executive Council, and sports enthusiasts from across the nation.
