The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced that the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) will officially commence operations on January 1, 2026, following the implementation of a new national tax law.

According to the government, the reform is aimed at strengthening revenue mobilization and improving the management of public finances to support sustainable national development.

In a statement signed by the Technical Assistant on Broadcast Media to the Executive Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service, Arabinrin Aderonke Atoyebi, the  Federal government disclosed that the announcement confirms the formal transition from the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) to a single, unified federal revenue authority.

A Major Shift in Revenue Administration

The establishment of the Nigeria Revenue Service represents a significant shift in how federal revenues are administered in Nigeria. Rather than a simple rebranding, the move introduces a redesigned institutional structure that reorganises how revenues are collected, managed, and reported.

Government officials explained that the new framework will improve fiscal planning and enable smarter public investment. By strengthening coordination across revenue functions, the NRS is expected to contribute to a more resilient national economy.

Focus on Integration and Technology

A key objective of the reform is the creation of a more integrated and technology-driven revenue system. The Nigeria Revenue Service is designed to align federal tax administration with Nigeria’s long-term economic and fiscal strategy.

Through modern administrative practices and innovation, the Service aims to improve efficiency while reducing complexity within the tax system.

Improved Transparency and Taxpayer Engagement

One of the major innovations introduced by the Nigeria Revenue Service is a stronger delivery framework built on transparency and accountability. Streamlined structures and clearer processes are expected to improve service delivery and enhance public trust.

As Nigeria’s unified federal revenue authority, the NRS provides a clearer pathway for citizens and businesses to understand their tax obligations, engage with the system, and comply with the law.

Commitment to Fair Revenue Administration

The Nigeria Revenue Service has reaffirmed its commitment to the fair and impartial application of tax laws, without favour or fear. Authorities say the Service will focus on accountability while fostering cooperation between government and taxpayers.

By strengthening transparency and improving compliance, the NRS is positioned to support long-term economic growth and fiscal sustainability.

Despite the institutional change, the Federal Government has assured stakeholders that the core mandate of mobilising federal revenues for national development remains unchanged.

The Nigeria Revenue Service will continue to operate on the principles of professionalism, integrity, fairness, and national service. Staff across all offices and regions of the Federation remain central to the institution’s operations, ensuring continuity and institutional stability.

As Nigeria approaches 2026, the Federal Government has reiterated its commitment to effective service delivery and responsible revenue administration through the Nigeria Revenue Service.
