The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) says it carried out 87 relief interventions in 2025 to support about 17,000 persons displaced by various disasters across the North-West zone.
The North-West Zonal Director of NEMA, Mr Sani Lokoja, disclosed this during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Kaduna.
Lokoja said the displaced persons were victims of banditry, flooding, rainstorms, windstorms, fire outbreaks and communal clashes in different parts of the zone.
According to him, NEMA conducted a total of 87 relief interventions during the year under review, providing emergency support and relief materials to affected individuals and communities.
He explained that Kaduna State recorded the highest number of interventions with 34 operations, followed by Sokoto State with 33 and Kano State with 20.
Lokoja added that Kebbi State recorded 16 interventions, Katsina recorded 14, Jigawa recorded seven, while Zamfara recorded six interventions.
The zonal director noted that banditry remained a major cause of displacement in Kaduna, Katsina, Zamfara, Sokoto and parts of Kebbi States.
He further stated that flooding and windstorms accounted for most of the interventions in Kano State and Jigawa State, while fire outbreaks affected both urban and rural communities across the zone.
Lokoja said NEMA provided relief materials and emergency assistance to displaced and affected persons in line with the agency’s mandate.
He added that the agency collaborated with state and local governments, as well as other relevant stakeholders, to stabilise affected communities.
Lokoja stressed the need for improved preparedness and stronger coordination to effectively address rising security challenges and climate-related risks in the North-West zone.
