The National Economic Council (NEC) has approved the establishment of the Cotton, Textile and Garment Development Board (CTGDB) to regulate and revitalize activities within the sector.
At a meeting chaired by Vice President Kashim Shettima and attended by the 36 state governors, the NEC also endorsed new strategies for agribusiness expansion and livestock transformation. These initiatives are projected to generate up to $90 billion in economic value by 2035.
Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media & Communications (Office of the Vice President), Mr. Stanley Nkwocha, said the CTGDB will be domiciled in the Presidency and funded through the Textile Import Levy collected by the Nigeria Customs Service.
Additionally, the Council approved the establishment of the Green Imperative Project (GIP) national office in Abuja, alongside regional offices across the six geopolitical zones. The GIP aims to modernize animal husbandry practices to address ongoing agricultural crises.
The latest moves by NEC signal a strong push toward diversifying Nigeria’s economy and modernizing key sectors critical to national growth and food security.
