Manchester United secured their place in the all-English final of the European competition with a commanding performance at Old Trafford, defeating the Spanish side 4-1 on the night and 7-1 on aggregate.
Mikel Jauregizar gave the visitors a glimmer of hope in the 31st minute, raising brief thoughts of a comeback after United’s dominant 3-0 win in the first leg. However, Erik ten Hag’s side responded in style.
Mason Mount came off the bench to score twice, while Casemiro and Rasmus Højlund also found the back of the net in what turned into a convincing display from the Red Devils.
Following the game, Portuguese manager Rúben Amorim praised Mount and youngster Kobbie Mainoo for their impactful performances off the bench.
“I’m so happy for Mason Mount. I really liked Kobbie Mainoo,” Amorim said. “Sometimes you are on the bench and you change the game. When you see that kind of guy like Mason working hard every day, eating well, having ice baths — when you have this kind of player you just want to help him. He is perfect for this position as he can be a midfielder, but also runs like a winger.”
Manchester United will now face Tottenham Hotspur in the final on May 21 in what promises to be a thrilling all-English showdown.
