A tragic midnight accident in Port Harcourt has left four pedestrians dead and two others injured, after a Toyota Camry lost control and struck a group of people walking along the road.
The incident occurred on Monday at midnight, and involved a vehicle with registration number ABJ 10 EM. According to a statement issued by Police Public Relations Officer Grace Iringe-Koko, the driver has been identified as 36-year-old Benson Peter Michael.
“The driver of a Toyota Camry with registration number ABJ 10 EM lost control of the vehicle and collided with six pedestrians,” Iringe-Koko said.
“Tragically, four of the pedestrians were confirmed dead at the scene, while two others sustained injuries and were immediately rushed to BMH Hospital for medical attention.”
The deceased have been taken to the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH) Mortuary, while the accidented vehicle has been recovered by the police and is currently at the station.
The driver is in custody, and the case will be transferred to the State Traffic Department for further investigation.
“The Command deeply regrets the unfortunate incident and assures the public that justice will be served,” Iringe-Koko added.
Authorities are urging road users to observe safety precautions, especially at night, to prevent further tragedies on the city’s roads.
