Manchester City reignited the Premier League title race with a commanding 3-0 victory over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, cutting the gap on leaders Arsenal to just six points.
Pep Guardiola’s side delivered a decisive second-half performance after a tightly contested opening period, with quickfire goals shifting the momentum firmly in City’s favour.
The breakthrough came in the 51st minute when Nico O’Reilly met a precise cross from Rayan Cherki with a close-range header to put City ahead.
Six minutes later, Cherki turned provider again, weaving through Chelsea’s defence before setting up Marc Guehi, who finished emphatically from the edge of the box to double the lead.
Chelsea struggled to respond and were punished again in the 68th minute after a defensive error allowed Jeremy Doku to steal possession and fire home City’s third goal.
The result comes after Arsenal suffered a surprise 2-1 defeat to Bournemouth, tightening the title race ahead of a crucial meeting between City and the Gunners at the Etihad Stadium on April 19.
City, who have now won 29 of their 32 Premier League matches in April in recent seasons, appear to be peaking at a decisive stage of the campaign.
For Chelsea, the defeat extends a difficult run of form, with the London club managing just one win in their last seven matches. They also remain in a tight race for Champions League qualification, sitting four points behind Liverpool.
Despite early chances for Chelsea, including a disallowed goal from Marc Cucurella and a strong save from Gianluigi Donnarumma to deny Pedro Neto, they were unable to match City’s intensity after the break.
Manager Pep Guardiola praised his side’s response, as City now prepare for a potentially season-defining clash against Arsenal that could further reshape the title race.
