Electric vehicle maker Lucid Motors has announced a new software update that will enable Apple CarPlay and Android Auto for owners of its Lucid Gravity SUV.
The update is scheduled to roll out to North American owners on Thursday, while customers in Europe and the Middle East are expected to receive it later in March.
Bringing phone integration to the Gravity SUV
The phone-mirroring features allow drivers to connect their smartphones directly to the vehicle’s infotainment system. Once connected, users can access apps such as navigation, music streaming, messaging, and calls through the car’s display.
Both CarPlay and Android Auto were already available on Lucid’s luxury sedan, the Lucid Air, but the newer Gravity SUV initially launched without them.
Software challenges after launch
Lucid has spent the past few months addressing software issues affecting the Gravity SUV. The problems became significant enough that the company’s interim leadership publicly apologized to customers.
The situation also led to internal changes, including the departure of several senior software executives. In addition, the company recently announced layoffs affecting about 12% of its workforce as part of a broader restructuring effort.
Investor day and future plans
The software update arrives as Lucid prepares for an investor day in New York City, where the company is expected to outline its next steps.
Among the topics likely to be discussed are:
- A new mid-size electric vehicle platform
- The company’s path to profitability
- Plans to launch a luxury robotaxi service in partnership with Uber and Nuro
The update signals Lucid’s effort to improve user experience for Gravity SUV owners while stabilizing its software ecosystem after the vehicle’s launch.
