History was made on Tuesday as Lieutenant Colonel Onyechi Anele officially assumed duty as the Acting Director of Army Public Relations, becoming the first female officer to hold the prestigious position in the history of the Nigerian Army.
The handover ceremony, held at the Army Headquarters in Abuja, also marked the formal exit of Major General Onyema Nwachukwu, who led the Directorate for nearly four years. In an emotional farewell speech, Nwachukwu described his time in office as “eventful and fulfilling,” noting that he met the challenges of the role with innovation, vision, and purpose.
“I dare to say with confidence that I did not merely react to these challenges, I boldly confronted them,” Nwachukwu said.
Among the achievements highlighted during his tenure were the acquisition of cutting-edge multimedia equipment, the creation of a Strategic Communications Centre, and the launch of the Nigerian Army Info TV, a digital platform to improve public engagement.
Taking the reins, Lt Col Anele expressed gratitude to the Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen Olufemi Oluyede, for entrusting her with the role. She described the appointment as both “historic and humbling,” and pledged to lead with transparency, professionalism, respect, and proactiveness.
“To be entrusted with this strategic role as the Nigerian Army spokesperson, being the first female officer to do so, is a moment I do not take lightly,” Anele said in her maiden speech.
She lauded the contributions of her predecessor, promising to build upon the solid foundation he laid. Anele emphasized the importance of collaboration with the media and called for responsible journalism in military reporting.
“We will continue to tell the Nigerian Army’s story, not just through words, but through actions that reflect honour, sacrifice, responsibility, and service to the nation.”
Anele also addressed officers, soldiers, and civilian staff of the Directorate, urging them to stay loyal, focused, and united, assuring that collective effort and shared vision will take Army Public Relations to greater heights.
