Members of the Senate Committee on Aviation and House of Representatives Committee on Aviation convened a closed-door session on Thursday following an inspection of the damage caused by Monday’s fire at Terminal 1 of the international wing of Murtala Muhammed International Airport.

The lawmakers arrived at the airport around 3:07 p.m. and inspected affected sections before meeting with the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria management, led by Managing Director Olubunmi Kuku.

The fire destroyed critical infrastructure and equipment, including assets of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency and the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency, according to FAAN Board Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje. He stressed that the cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Ganduje praised the response of over 150 firefighters who worked to extinguish the blaze, noting that while sensitive equipment was lost, no lives were endangered. He emphasized the fire’s impact on ongoing aviation sector reforms under the administration of Bola Tinubu.

“The core value of FAAN is safety, and this really affected the safety of the airport, including employees, passengers, equipment, and infrastructure,” Ganduje said. “The situation is under control now, but it’s unfortunate.”
