The Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) has taken a significant step toward clean energy adoption with a strategic engagement held on July 9, 2025.
The meeting brought together key stakeholders including the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas (Pi-CNG), RIL Hydro Kraft Limited, major boat operators, and marine industry players across the state.
Held at LASWA’s headquarters in Ikoyi, the session focused on introducing Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) as an alternative fuel for inland water transport, aligning with national energy transition goals and Lagos’ vision for safer, greener, and cost-efficient mobility.
In his opening remarks, LASWA General Manager Mr. Oluwadamilola Emmanuel emphasized the critical role of water transportation in the future of Lagos mobility and the strategic importance of energy transition.
He outlined LASWA’s long-term goal to reduce carbon emissions, enhance safety, and lower operational costs through the introduction of CNG-powered boats and electric ferries.
Engr. Micheal Oluwagbemi, CEO of the Presidential Initiative on CNG, presented the federal government’s roadmap for CNG expansion, highlighting successes in the road transport sector and pledging full technical and policy support for marine CNG deployment.
Mr. Layi Solesi, CEO of RIL Hydro Kraft Limited, offered a detailed technical briefing on CNG engine conversions, fueling infrastructure, safety protocols, and cost savings.
He also shared real-world case studies from other coastal cities, reinforcing the feasibility of marine CNG adoption in Lagos.
Boat operators voiced concerns around affordability, safety, infrastructure, and engine compatibility. In response, both LASWA and federal representatives assured them of a phased rollout backed by training, capacity building, and inclusive stakeholder engagement.
