The Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) has reaffirmed its readiness to conduct credible councillorship by-elections in the state, following the death of two newly elected councillors.
The affected councillors, Mrs. Oluwakemi Sabiu of Ward C, Ibeju-Lekki Local Government, and Mrs. Zaynab Shotayo of Ward H, Odi-Olowo/Ojuwoye Local Council Development Area (LCDA), died just days after the July 12 local government elections and their swearing-in.
LASIEC Chairman, retired Justice Bola Okikiolu-Ighile, represented by Electoral Commissioner Mr. Samson Ajibade, gave the assurance on Thursday. She stressed that the commission would leave no stone unturned in ensuring that the upcoming by-elections are free, fair, and credible.
“The demise of these two elected councillors has created vacancies that must, in line with LASIEC laws and democratic principles, be duly filled. Democracy thrives on representation, and the people of the affected wards deserve the opportunity to once again elect their representatives,” Okikiolu-Ighile said.
She emphasized that the commission had already set in motion processes to guarantee transparent and inclusive polls, adding that collaboration with political parties, security agencies, civil society organisations, media, and traditional and religious leaders would be key to success.
“It is only through your cooperation, vigilance, and commitment to due process that the by-elections can be successful,” she said.
The LASIEC chairman added that the by-elections would further strengthen democracy at the grassroots by ensuring that the will of the people is reflected.
