Former Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, has expressed profound sorrow over the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, describing the loss as both national and deeply personal.
In a heartfelt statement released on Monday in Abuja, Mohammed said Buhari was more than a former leader or boss—he was a mentor, pillar of support, and a father figure.
“Many have rightly described him as a rare patriot, a man of unwavering faith and character, an incorruptible leader, and the epitome of honesty. But beyond those noble attributes, President Buhari was a true humanist,” Mohammed wrote.
Reflecting on his time as the government’s spokesperson, Mohammed said Buhari showed genuine empathy and compassion, always asking about his well-being despite carrying the much heavier burden of leadership.
“In his eyes, I could do no wrong. That unwavering support meant the world to me,” he added.
The former Minister noted that their bond went beyond official duties, revealing that Buhari kept in close contact after leaving office.
“Our final meeting was during the last Ramadan in Kaduna. Though I was told he wasn’t taking visitors that day, he made time for me. We spent hours together. I had no idea it would be our last meeting,” he recounted.
He ended his tribute with prayers:
“It was truly a privilege for me to have known and worked with him. I pray Almighty God forgives all his shortcomings and grants him Aljannah Firdaus. May He also comfort his family and all Nigerians who mourn this remarkable man.”
