Excitement is mounting across the continent as the African Union Commission and the International Committee of the All Africa Music Awards (AFRIMA) prepare to announce the host city for AFRIMA 2025. The highly anticipated reveal is scheduled for May 13 at the AU headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
The competition has narrowed to two cultural giants: Lagos, Nigeria and Gauteng Province, South Africa — both internationally acclaimed for their rich music scenes and ability to host large-scale events.
In 2024, the AU formally extended invitations to both countries, writing directly to Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi, urging them to explore the immense benefits of hosting the prestigious event.
Since then, both cities have undergone thorough assessments, stakeholder engagements, and committee evaluations.
“Beyond its pulsating music culture, Lagos boasts impressive infrastructure, urban rail lines, upgraded water transport, and a booming real estate sector,” the statement noted, reinforcing the city’s readiness to welcome thousands of global music lovers.
On the other hand, Gauteng stands tall as the home of Amapiano and Kwaito, offering a blend of cultural heritage and modern event facilities. Its cities — Johannesburg, Pretoria, and Soweto — have previously hosted major international events, including the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
Both governors have voiced strong support, highlighting potential gains in tourism, youth development, and job creation.
According to AFRIMA’s Chief Experience Officer, Adenrele Niyi, hosting the event is about more than music:
“It brings global visibility, boosts local economies, and leaves a long-lasting legacy through outreach programs and industry summits,” she said.
AFRIMA 2025 is expected to reach a global broadcast audience of over 400 million, offering the selected city unmatched international exposure. Previous host countries such as Ghana, Nigeria, and Senegal have all reported long-term cultural and economic benefits.
As Africa counts down to May 13, the music world eagerly awaits. Whether the nod goes to Lagos or Gauteng, AFRIMA 2025 is set to be a celebration of African music, creativity, and unity like never before.
