The Lagos State chapter of the Labour Party (LP) has scheduled its chairmanship primaries for Friday, May 16, in preparation for the upcoming July 12 Local Government elections.
Speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria on Thursday, the LP State Chairman, Pastor Dayo Ekong, confirmed that the primaries would be conducted across all local government areas in the state. The party will use an indirect (delegate-based) primary system to select its chairmanship candidates.
“Our councillorship primaries will hold today (Thursday) across all the wards, while the chairmanship primaries will be held on Friday in all the local government areas,” Ekong stated.
She assured the public that the process would be free, fair, and transparent, expressing confidence in the party’s chances ahead of the local elections.
“We are committed to free, fair and transparent primary elections. We are confident of a good outing in the election,” she said.
The Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) is set to conduct the polls in 20 Local Government Areas (LGAs) and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs).
The Labour Party’s preparation signals its readiness to make significant gains in the local governance landscape of Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial capital.
