Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has congratulated Nigerian athlete Rukayat Suleimon for making sporting history as the first female blind sambist in the world to win a gold medal at the World Sambo Cup in Yerevan, Armenia.
In a statement issued on Monday through his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Gboyega Akosile, the governor praised Suleimon for her remarkable achievement, describing her victory as a moment of pride for Lagos State, Nigeria, and Africa.
Suleimon, a Lagos State judo champion and one of the pioneering female athletes in international sambo competition organised by the International Sambo Federation (FIAS), claimed gold in the women’s 54kg category after defeating opponents from Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan.
Sanwo-Olu said her victory represents resilience, determination, and excellence, noting that she defied significant odds to emerge champion at her international debut.
He also highlighted that Suleimon has become the first Nigerian and African athlete to win gold at an international sambo event, while also setting a global milestone as the first female blind athlete to achieve such a feat in the sport.
According to the governor, her achievement reflects “what Nigerian excellence looks like” and demonstrates the power of preparation and commitment.
He described Suleimon as an inspiration to young girls across the country, encouraging them to pursue their dreams regardless of challenges.
The governor added that her success serves as a powerful reminder of the potential of Nigerian athletes on the global stage when given opportunity and support.
Suleimon’s historic win has drawn widespread praise from sports stakeholders, with many calling for increased investment in para-sports and grassroots athlete development.
