The Lagos State Government is set to resume the monthly environmental sanitation exercise, according to the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab. He made this announcement during an inspection tour of Idi-Araba, Orile Iganmu, and Alaba Rago Market.
In a statement released by the Ministry’s spokesman, Kunle Adeshina, Wahab emphasized that maintaining clean surroundings must become a daily culture for all residents.
“The government has resolved to bring back the monthly sanitation exercise, and a formal date for its commencement will be announced soon,” Wahab stated.
During his visit to Alaba Rago Market, the commissioner expressed disappointment at the unsanitary conditions and illegal waste dumping. He noted that despite previous enforcement actions and temporary closure of the market, traders had resumed unsanitary practices and illegal extensions onto road medians and drainage channels.
“They’ve turned the road median into a dumpsite and blocked drainage systems. We’ve given them till tomorrow evening to comply or face market closure,” he warned.
Wahab added that the market chairman has agreed to clear the infractions and take responsibility for maintaining surrounding infrastructure. If the market fails to comply, the government may seal it again by 6:00 PM on Monday.
The commissioner also issued a statewide warning to all traders and residents: Trading on roads, medians, and drainage setbacks is illegal, illegal markets and activities will be shut down, waste must be properly bagged and disposed of in designated areas.
“We’re urging all Lagosians to take ownership of public infrastructure and stop littering. Cleanliness is a shared responsibility,” Wahab said.
The government continues its push to instill sustainable sanitation habits and ensure compliance with the Lagos State Environmental Law.
