The Labour Party has criticized the proposed salary increase for political office holders by the Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMFAC), describing the move as unconscionable amid the current economic hardship facing Nigerians.
In a statement issued on Friday by its interim National Publicity Secretary, Tony Akeni, the party said the proposal is a misadventure that should be urgently reconsidered.
“Rather than increasing the salaries of political office holders, the commission should advocate for an upward review of the national minimum wage from its current ₦70,000,” Akeni stated.
The party also referenced the United States Government’s recent call for improved wages in Nigeria, urging RMFAC to show similar concern for the welfare of Nigerian workers.
“If a foreign nation could demonstrate such empathy towards our suffering citizens, the RMFAC’s chairman and commission members have no valid excuse not to do more,” Akeni added.
The development comes as Nigerians continue to grapple with inflation, high cost of living, and economic uncertainty, fueling debates over government spending priorities.
