Spain’s top football clubs are set to take a nostalgic trip down memory lane as 38 of the country’s 42 premier teams will wear retro kits to celebrate their cultural identity and decades of history.

The initiative, reported by BBC Sport on Wednesday, sees clubs sporting designs inspired by iconic kits from their past, honouring traditions and fan culture across the country.

While Barcelona, Rayo Vallecano, and Getafe will not wear special jerseys due to logistical reasons, they remain involved in the campaign. Real Madrid has opted out entirely.

The retro celebration extends beyond players’ kits. Match officials will don vintage-style attire, broadcast graphics will reflect designs from past decades, and a retro-style match ball will be used throughout the weekend.

The kits were officially unveiled on 19 March during Madrid Fashion Week, highlighting an innovative collaboration between football and fashion.

La Liga’s campaign is the first coordinated retro shirt initiative among Europe’s five major leagues, although similar “retro rounds” have been seen in other sports, including Australia’s National Rugby League and Australian Football League.

Fans can look forward to a weekend of nostalgia that brings together history, style, and sport in a unique celebration of Spain’s football heritage.
