The Kwara State Government has ordered the immediate closure of schools in four local government areas due to escalating insecurity in certain communities.
The directive was communicated on Wednesday by the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Kwara State branch. In a circular obtained by Channels Television, the NUT Chairman, Yusuf Agboola, instructed that schools in Isin, Irepodun, Ifelodun, and Ekiti LGAs remain closed until further notice.
Agboola explained that the union was acting on instructions from the Ministry of Education and Human Capital Development, following concerns over new security threats in Kwara South.
The circular stated:
“Comrade chairmen, this is to inform you and through you, all schools in the above local governments of the instruction to close down all schools with immediate effect until further notice. This decision was occasioned by the security challenges ravaging the area and the efforts of the government to control the situation. Treat this information as important and with the urgency it deserves, as it emanated from the ministry.”
Agboola further assured school heads and teachers that additional directives would be communicated as the security situation evolves.
