The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr Festus Keyamo, has constituted a technical committee to facilitate the launch of an indigenous airline in Edo State.
The committee was set up during a courtesy visit to the minister by the Governor of Edo State, Mr Monday Okpebholo, as discussions intensified on the immediate activation of a state-backed airline to operate from Benin Airport.
Governor Okpebholo, who was accompanied by key members of his cabinet, underscored the urgency of establishing a homegrown airline, describing aviation as a critical catalyst for Edo State’s economic revival, investment inflows, and job creation.
According to a statement issued by the Media Aide to the Aviation Minister, Mr Tunde Moshood, the governor disclosed that the Edo State Government is already exploring several partnership options, including engagements with South African investors who have pledged to provide aircraft for the take-off of operations.
“If I have my way, I want this airline to kick off immediately, like tomorrow, even before the election,” Okpebholo said. “Edo State needs a strong aviation presence to open up our economy and reposition Benin as a major hub.”
Welcoming the initiative, Keyamo described the plan as timely and strategic, noting that the ministry has also been engaging potential investors who have shown increasing interest in the commercial viability of Benin Airport.
The minister recalled the historical significance of Benin Airport in Nigeria’s aviation landscape, saying it once served as a major hub for the old Midwest region during the peak years of the now-defunct Okada Air.
“Benin Airport used to be a strong aviation hub during the glory days of Okada Air. There is no reason it cannot reclaim that status,” Keyamo said. “The interest we are seeing today confirms that Benin is ready again.”
To fast-track the process, the minister requested that the Edo State governor nominate a focal person to work directly with the Director of Air Transport Management at the ministry to ensure effective coordination, regulatory compliance, and operational planning.
“This committee will report to me and you every week for effective coordination,” Keyamo added. “With proper collaboration, Benin Airport should be fully operational between the first and second quarters of this year.”
