The Kano State House of Assembly on Thursday began impeachment proceedings against Deputy Governor Aminu Abdulsalam over allegations of misconduct, abuse of office, and breach of public trust.
The development was reported by Leadership Newspaper.
The impeachment notice was presented on the floor of the House by the Majority Leader, Lawan Dala, and was read during plenary by the Speaker, Ismail Falgore.
Lawmakers said the action was initiated in line with Section 188 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, which empowers a state legislature to commence impeachment proceedings against a deputy governor accused of gross misconduct.
According to the Assembly, a total of 38 lawmakers signed the impeachment notice. Speaker Falgore has directed that Abdulsalam be formally served with the notice in accordance with constitutional procedures.
The move comes amid ongoing political tensions in Kano State following the defection of Governor Abba Yusuf from the New Nigeria Peoples Party to the All Progressives Congress last year.
Deputy Governor Abdulsalam reportedly declined to join the governor in the defection, choosing instead to remain with the NNPP. His decision is said to have deepened divisions within the state government, fueling speculation about his political future and paving the way for the current impeachment proceedings.
