The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, on Monday met with Bola Tinubu in Lagos, reaffirming the European Union’s commitment to strengthening ties with Nigeria despite global economic uncertainties.
The meeting, held at the President’s Lagos residence, was attended by key government officials, including the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, and the Minister of Budget and National Planning, Abubakar Atiku Bagudu.
Speaking to journalists after the meeting, Kallas said discussions focused on key areas such as security, trade, investment, and critical raw materials.
“We are very like-minded partners, the European Union and Nigeria. And today we explored new ways to collaborate. The global security situation is very serious, as the geopolitical picture shows,” she said.
She emphasised the importance of cooperation among nations that support a rules-based international system, noting that both parties discussed expanding collaboration in investment and trade.
Kallas also highlighted opportunities for cooperation in critical raw materials, cybersecurity, and broader security issues.
President Tinubu, in his remarks, assured the EU delegation of Nigeria’s commitment to deepening the partnership. He also expressed appreciation for the bloc’s continued support to the country across various sectors.
The meeting signals a renewed push to strengthen diplomatic, economic, and security relations between Nigeria and the European Union amid evolving global challenges.
