Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to empowering women through deliberate actions and policies that ensure they are seen, heard, and provided with equal opportunities. He made this statement on Friday during the 2025 International Women’s Day celebration, held at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Onikan, Lagos, with the theme “Accelerate Action.”
Governor Sanwo-Olu highlighted the importance of the theme, emphasizing the need to go beyond rhetoric and take decisive steps toward achieving gender equality. He also marked the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, a pivotal moment in advancing women’s rights globally.
“Through deliberate policies and initiatives, we are committed to empowering women across all sectors. From economic opportunities to access to healthcare and education, we continue to bridge the gender gap in Lagos State,” he said. “The theme ‘Accelerate Action’ reminds us of the urgency to address the inequalities women still face.”
The Governor spoke on various initiatives his administration has implemented, including the HE for SHE programme, which fosters an inclusive environment for women, and investments in skills acquisition centers and entrepreneurial support. He also announced the distribution of eco-friendly stoves to women across local governments starting Monday.
Governor Sanwo-Olu emphasized the collective responsibility required for gender equality and the need for men to actively participate in the movement. He also recognized his wife, Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, for her advocacy in maternal and child healthcare and her support for women’s causes.
The Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Hon. Bolaji Cecilia Dada, commended the administration for creating an inclusive society that promotes financial independence for women. She also revealed the approval of the domestication of the Economic Empowerment Policy in Higher Institutions.
In his lecture, Prof. Olurotimi Coker, a professor of Psychiatry and Consultant Psychiatrist, underscored the importance of mental health for women’s well-being, providing strategies for managing stress. The Special Adviser to the Governor on Climate Change and Circular Economy, Mrs. Titilayo Oshodi, also spoke about the need to empower women in the circular economy to achieve financial independence.
The celebration was attended by government officials, women’s groups, and citizens from across Lagos State, all of whom participated in a march past to mark the event.
