The Ijaw National Congress (INC) has formally appealed to President Bola Tinubu to intervene and address the controversial remarks made by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr. Nyesom Wike. The INC claims that Wike’s comments, in which he referred to the Ijaw people as “a minority of minorities” in Rivers and other South-South states, except Bayelsa, were deeply problematic and divisive.
In a statement issued on Friday from Abuja, Chief Ezonebi Oyakemeagbegha, the National Publicity Secretary of the INC, expressed concern over the remarks, noting that such statements could strain the peace and unity of the Niger Delta region. The INC emphasized that it would continue to promote harmony but urged President Tinubu to caution Wike and ensure he remains focused on his ministerial duties.
“We will maintain peace and stability, but we call on President Tinubu to address the issue and redirect the Minister’s focus to his core responsibilities,” the INC said. The congress reiterated its commitment to fostering unity within the Niger Delta and ensuring the well-being of all communities in the region.
This appeal comes as tensions rise over the remarks attributed to the FCT Minister, with calls for a public clarification and redirection of focus. The Ijaw National Congress insists that preserving the harmony enjoyed by the people of the Niger Delta must remain a priority for all political leaders.
