Joint unions argue bill undermines existing professional regulatory bodies, threatening non-medical health professions.

Health workers under the Joint Health Sector Unions and the Assembly of Healthcare Professional Associations staged a protest at the Unity Fountain against the proposed Health Sector Regulatory Bill currently before the National Assembly.

The protesters argued that the bill, if passed, would place all health professions under the regulation of the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria, effectively subordinating other health professions to medical doctors.

They emphasised that every health profession already has established regulatory bodies and warned that the new bill could render non-medical health professionals “second-class” within the sector.

The protesting health workers also plan to march to the National Assembly to present their case directly to lawmakers, urging a reconsideration of the bill to protect the autonomy of all health professions.
