Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has approved a major increase in the monthly allowance of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members serving in the state, raising it from ₦4,000 to ₦50,000.
According to a statement from the Abia State Government, the new allowance structure is aimed at motivating corps members and bridging the human capacity gap in key sectors.
The statement explained that, in addition to the Federal Government’s ₦77,000 monthly allowance, corps members serving in Abia State will now receive an extra ₦20,000 from the state government.
Those deployed to State Government establishments will earn an additional ₦10,000, while teaching and medical personnel will receive ₦30,000 as a discriminatory allowance.
“The New Abia has paved the way for a new era for Corps Members. Governor Otti’s administration isn’t just talking—it’s acting,” the statement read.
It added that the state government’s ongoing efforts to support corps members include the renovation of the NYSC Orientation Camp in Bende Local Government Area, as well as improvements to logistics and power infrastructure.
“Whether it’s fixing internal roads within the NYSC camp, installing power equipment, or upgrading dilapidated buildings, the Governor’s Midas touch and hands-on approach is transforming the NYSC experience in Abia,” the statement continued.
Despite the camp being federally owned, Governor Otti emphasized that his administration would continue to invest in all critical infrastructure within the state whether federal or state-owned to improve living and working conditions for residents and youth service members.
“Governor Otti believes that every institution or infrastructure within Abia, federal or state-owned, deserves attention,” the statement concluded.
The initiative has been widely praised as a bold step toward enhancing youth welfare, promoting public service, and strengthening education and healthcare delivery in the state.
