The Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology and Environmental Sciences (FUTEs), Iyin Ekiti, Prof. Gbenga Aribisala, has announced that the new institution will begin its admission process in September this year.
Speaking in Ado Ekiti on Sunday at a reception to mark the 90th birthday of his mother, Deaconess Felicia Aribisala, the VC disclosed that the process would commence after the National Universities Commission (NUC) Resource Verification exercise.
“The NUC is coming for verification of all 36 programmes we intend to offer. We have provided modern laboratories, a library, classrooms, offices, and furniture. We are confident we will scale through,” Aribisala said.
According to him, once the verification is successful, prospective students would be invited to change their institution of choice to FUTEs, after which admission would begin. Recruitment of staff would follow immediately.
Prof. Aribisala also appealed to well-meaning Nigerians and stakeholders to support the university, stressing that running a technology-driven institution is capital-intensive.
“Universities need a lot of funding. The government cannot do it alone. We are appealing to individuals and organizations—those who can donate buildings, scholarships, or build hostels. Funding is crucial for us at this stage,” he added.
On land disputes that had earlier surrounded the institution, the VC confirmed that the matter had been resolved amicably, with 200 hectares of land secured for the university.
“The community and government have reached agreements with the affected families. Compensation will be paid, and there is now peace in the host community,” he said.
With structures in place and community support secured, FUTEs is set to join Nigeria’s growing list of specialized universities, focusing on technology and environmental sciences.
