Former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has passed away at the age of 82.

Garba Shehu, Buhari’s former spokesperson, announced the news on Sunday in a post shared on X (formerly Twitter).

“The family of the former president has announced the passing on of the former president, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, this afternoon in a clinic in London. May Allah accept him in Aljannatul Firdaus, Amin,” Shehu wrote.

According to family sources, Buhari had been battling an undisclosed ailment and was recently discharged from an intensive care unit in London. He was reportedly taken ill during a routine medical visit abroad and remained under observation in the weeks preceding his death. Though details of his illness were not disclosed publicly, the former president was believed to be recuperating until his condition worsened.

Buhari first served as military head of state from 1983 to 1985. Decades later, he returned as an elected president in 2015, ultimately serving two terms until 2023.

His civilian presidency was marked by an ambitious anti-corruption agenda, economic reforms, and sustained efforts to tackle insecurity across Nigeria.

Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced in the coming hours as tributes continue to pour in from leaders, citizens, and dignitaries across the nation.
