In a statement emphasizing the importance of prioritizing the welfare of the people, former President Muhammadu Buhari has advised the members of the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF) to adopt a citizen-centric approach in their governance practices. Speaking through his spokesman, Garba Shehu, Buhari highlighted that leadership is both a challenge and an opportunity—a balance that is crucial to advancing national development.
The remarks came during a visit by a delegation of All Progressives Congress (APC) governors, led by Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma, to Buhari’s residence in Kaduna. Reflecting on his tenure, the former president underscored that effective leadership involves putting the welfare of the populace above personal interests. “Leaders should accord importance to the welfare of the people, not themselves,” he said, adding that his decision to leave office with the same physical assets he had before his presidency was a personal testament to his values.
Buhari also expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu’s administration for renovating his Kaduna home. He noted that while the building’s external appearance remained familiar, significant improvements had been made internally—an act that underscored the government’s commitment to preserving history while ensuring progress.
Governor Hope Uzodinma, who chairs the Progressive Governors Forum, reciprocated the sentiments of admiration during the occasion of Eid-el-Fitr. Uzodinma praised Buhari’s pivotal role in the founding of the APC and lauded his contributions to Nigeria’s democracy and governance. “Many of us recall with pride the principled role you played in the founding of the APC. That legacy continues to shape our party’s identity and direction,” he said. He further highlighted Buhari’s achievements, including strengthening national security, economic recovery initiatives, and anti-corruption measures.
Emphasizing continuity within the party, Uzodinma commended President Tinubu’s reform-driven leadership, noting that Buhari’s recent public endorsement underscored the unity and forward momentum of the APC. “Today we honour you, not just for your past service but for the enduring values you represent,” said Uzodinma, calling on the former president to continue guiding the party towards a more prosperous Nigeria.
As the Progressive Governors Forum looks ahead, both leaders agreed that adopting and implementing a governance style that centers on the needs and welfare of citizens will be key to sustaining and enhancing the developmental strides made in recent years.
