The First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, on Thursday donated 50 compressed natural gas (CNG) buses and 30 tricycles to Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State, to address transportation challenges faced by students and staff.
The handover took place at the university’s sports arena, where the vehicles were inaugurated for immediate use. Senator Tinubu was accompanied by prominent dignitaries including the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, Osun State First Lady Titilayo Adeleke, and wives of other Nigerian governors.
Other notable attendees included the Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Ghandi Olaoye, the Ajero of Ijero-Ekiti, Oba Joseph Adewole, and Osun APC governorship candidate Bola Oyebamiji.
OAU Vice-Chancellor Professor Simeon Bamire praised the First Lady, describing her as a strong supporter of the university’s growth. He said:
“We thank the First Lady for her generosity to the school; she is one of the most shining stars of the institution. The buses and tricycles will significantly ease mobility for students, staff and members of the university community.”
OAU Students’ Union President Oluwatodimu David also commended the donation, noting it would substantially reduce transportation difficulties on campus. He added that Senator Tinubu’s additional interventions, such as campus beautification projects and renovation of the university’s Amphitheatre, demonstrate her commitment as a strong ally of the OAU community.
The initiative is expected to improve access to education, enhance quality of life on campus, and support the university’s broader development goals.
