Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has responded to public criticism over a viral video showing her interaction with Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, describing the backlash as a “needless controversy.”
In a statement on her Facebook page on Tuesday, Mrs Tinubu noted that leaders understand their duties, while critics often amplify minor issues for attention. She wrote:
“Those entrusted with leadership understand their duties and how to steer the affairs of society. More often, it is the followers and critics who scrutinise every step, amplify minor missteps, and turn them into needless controversy. Ọṣun lè tèǹtẹ̀ – Osun is ahead.”
The comments came after footage from the 10th coronation anniversary of the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, circulated online, showing Governor Adeleke pausing mid-speech after singing a short song, during which the First Lady approached him, gestured, and whispered something to him.
Reactions have been divided. Critics labelled the interaction inappropriate or embarrassing, including African Democratic Congress chieftain Dele Momodu, who described it as bullying. Meanwhile, supporters, including Dayo Fashola, an aide to former Governor Adegboyega Oyetola, defended the First Lady, calling the gesture lighthearted and appropriate.
Akintunde Bello, Senior Special Assistant to Governor Adeleke, urged caution, insisting the act was not suitable for a public setting.
Neither Governor Adeleke nor the Presidency has issued further comment, even as social media continues to debate the incident.
