The Federal Government has announced plans to introduce new measures aimed at tackling internet fraud and cyber insecurity in Nigeria. This initiative comes as part of efforts to enhance global cooperation in combating cybercrime, which the government acknowledges transcends national borders.
The announcement was made in Abuja on Monday during a press briefing ahead of the National Cybersecurity Conference scheduled for July 2025.
Sa’ad Abubakar, National Cybersecurity Coordinator from the Office of the National Security Advisor, emphasized that combating cybercrime requires a comprehensive approach involving the entire government and society. “Fighting cybercrime must take the whole of society and the whole of government approach,” he said.
Beyond the current deterrence strategies, which include arrests and prosecutions by agencies like the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Abubakar stressed the importance of nurturing youth into responsible citizens capable of positively contributing to the country’s digital economy.
Kashifu Abdullahi, Director-General of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), added that work on updating the Cyber Crime Act is already underway to strengthen legal frameworks against cyber offenses.
The upcoming National Cybersecurity Conference is expected to bring together stakeholders from Nigeria and abroad to chart a coordinated path toward a safer cyberspace.
