The Federal Government has cautioned that heavy rainfall between April 8 and April 12, 2026, may trigger flooding across several communities in 10 states.

The warning was issued by the National Flood Early Warning Centre under the Federal Ministry of Environment in a notice signed by Usman Bokani, Director of the Erosion, Flood and Coastal Zone Management Department.

“The following locations and their environs are likely to witness heavy rainfall that may lead to flooding within the period of prediction: 8th April – 12th April, 2026,” the notice stated.

Affected areas include:

Ebonyi: Afikpo, Nkalagu

Anambra: Atani, Iyowa Odekpe, Odekpe, Onitsha

Ogun: Ayetoro, Ilaro

Taraba: Donga, Kwata Kanawa, Lau, Serti, Takum, Yorro

Cross River: Edor, Ikom, Itigidi

Benue: Igumale

Imo: Nworievbi, Okigwe, Otoko, Owerri

Delta: Oko Anara

Rivers: Port Harcourt

Abia: Umuahia

The ministry emphasised that the rainfall may cause flooding in the listed areas and their surrounding communities.

Earlier warnings from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency and the Federal Government had advised farmers against early planting following “deceptive” rains in February and March 2026. The Lagos State Government also urged residents in March to prepare for heavy rainfall and possible flash floods as the rainy season begins.

Authorities have called on stakeholders and residents in affected regions to take precautionary measures to mitigate the impact of potential flooding.
