The Federal Government has celebrated the victorious return of the Super Falcons, following their historic win at the 2024 CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Rabat, Morocco.
In a statement issued on Monday by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, the government hailed the triumph as more than a sporting milestone, describing it as a testament to the “resilience, excellence, and indomitable Nigerian spirit.”
“The Super Falcons have, with unmatched skill, discipline, and unity, inscribed Nigeria’s name in gold on the continental stage,” Idris stated. “They have made the entire nation proud.”
On behalf of President Bola Tinubu, the minister commended the players, coaching crew, and technical staff for their unwavering commitment and courage throughout the tournament.
He added, “You have inspired a new generation of Nigerians and demonstrated the power of sports as a unifying and uplifting force.”
Idris further assured that the Tinubu administration remains committed to increased investment in sports development, promising improved platforms and resources to empower Nigerian athletes to thrive on the global stage.
To honour the team’s return, the government announced a ceremonial procession in Abuja, starting from the City Gate, passing through Eagle Square, and concluding at the Presidential Villa, where the champions will be officially received.
This victory marks Nigeria’s 10th WAFCON title, reaffirming the Super Falcons’ undisputed dominance in African women’s football.
“The Super Falcons have flown the Nigerian flag high and brought joy to millions of our citizens. Welcome home, champions of Africa,” the statement concluded.
