The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, on Thursday handed over 12 new ambulances to hospitals across the territory to strengthen emergency healthcare delivery.

Speaking at the handover ceremony in Abuja, Wike explained that the intervention is part of broader efforts to enhance emergency response within the FCT’s health system. He emphasized the link between road infrastructure, education, and healthcare, noting that well-maintained roads are critical for ambulances to operate effectively.

He said:
“So many people ask why we are focusing on road infrastructure and education. But if there are no good roads, these ambulances may break down, and emergency response becomes useless. First things first — and that’s what we have been able to do.”

Wike also disclosed that the FCT Administration is rehabilitating and furnishing 14 health centres and has directed relevant authorities to recruit additional healthcare personnel to strengthen the sector.

Earlier, Dr. Olalodipo Fasawe, Mandate Secretary of the FCT Health Services and Environment Secretariat, described the procurement and distribution of the ambulances as a major step toward improving emergency healthcare. She highlighted the impact of ongoing road projects on improving access to healthcare, particularly in rural areas like Abaji, Kwali, and Gwagwalada, where travel times have been significantly reduced.

Dr. Fasawe also praised the administration for prioritizing healthcare worker welfare, including payment of outstanding allowances dating back to 2021, hazard allowances, wage awards, and funding for medical residency training. She noted the upgrade of the FCT School of Nursing to a full-fledged College of Nursing as part of the commitment to accessible, high-quality, and people-centered healthcare.

The initiative reflects a coordinated effort by the FCT Administration to ensure efficient emergency services, better healthcare outcomes, and improved wellbeing for residents.
