The Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) has refuted claims linking it to a prepaid meter distribution scheme reportedly underway in Badagry.
In a statement dated August 14, 2025, and signed by its management on the company’s official X handle, EKEDC described the scheme as fraudulent, stressing that its alleged promoters were unknown to the organisation.
“Our attention has been drawn to the trending online publication titled ‘Hunpe Receives Briefing as 70,000 Prepaid Meter Distribution Kicks Off in Badagry’. The said publication… purportedly positions the meter distribution as a public-private partnership initiative between the Government and DamLaw Energy Concept,” the statement read.
“For the avoidance of doubt… EKEDC and its Agbara District categorically dissociate themselves from the said publication and the prepaid meter distribution. The purported promoters… are neither our contractors, nor certified Meter Asset Providers (MAPs), and not staff members of the organisation,” it added.
The DisCo clarified that all genuine meter rollout programmes are sponsored by the Federal Government in collaboration with Distribution Companies and are always preceded by official public sensitisation.
EKEDC urged customers to verify the authenticity of any metering initiative before participation, warning that it would not be liable for losses from unauthorised transactions.
Official updates on EKEDC’s metering programmes are available via its website, verified social media pages, and customer care email.
