The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has clarified the reasons behind the arrest of popular social media figure Martins Otse, widely known as VeryDarkMan, stating that his detention followed multiple petitions submitted against him.
VeryDarkMan was arrested on Friday after visiting a GTBank branch in Abuja to lodge a complaint regarding an alleged deduction from his mother’s bank account. His arrest quickly gained attention, sparking public outcry and widespread calls for his release across social media platforms.
In a statement provided to BBC News Pidgin on Monday, EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale explained that the arrest was legally justified. “We arrested him to respond to a series of allegations raised against him by some petitioners,” Oyewale said.
He added that VeryDarkMan will be released once bail conditions are met and that the case will be formally taken to court as soon as possible. “We are law-abiding,” Oyewale emphasized.
While the specific nature of the allegations has not been publicly disclosed, the EFCC’s confirmation suggests an active investigation is underway. The arrest has made #FreeVeryDarkMan trend online, with fans, netizens, and notable Nigerians urging for a fair and transparent process.
As of now, VeryDarkMan remains in EFCC custody pending further legal proceedings.
