Eddie Howe Returns to Newcastle United Dugout After Pneumonia Recovery

Magpies boss back in action ahead of crucial Premier League run-in.

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has returned to work this week after recovering from pneumonia, giving the Magpies a major lift ahead of Saturday’s Premier League clash with Ipswich Town.

The 47-year-old head coach had been hospitalised earlier this month, missing three matches as assistants Jason Tindall and Graeme Jones took temporary charge. Despite his absence, Newcastle secured impressive home wins over Manchester United and Crystal Palace, before falling 4-1 away to Aston Villa last weekend.

A club statement confirmed Howe’s return to the training ground, stating:

“Eddie had recently been hospitalised with pneumonia and has now returned to work after a period of recovery. We thank supporters for their warm wishes.”

Howe is expected to be back on the touchline at St James’ Park this weekend as Newcastle continue their push for Champions League qualification. The Magpies are currently fifth in the table, with a game in hand over sixth-placed Aston Villa. A win against struggling Ipswich could move them temporarily above Manchester City and Nottingham Forest, both of whom are involved in FA Cup action.

Although Tindall and Jones filled in capably, Howe’s return is seen as crucial at this key stage of the season. His leadership has been credited with transforming Newcastle into genuine top-five contenders.

Last week, Howe expressed his gratitude to fans and NHS staff, saying:

“I’m immensely grateful for the specialist care I received and, after a period of recovery, I look forward to being back as soon as possible.”

Newcastle’s final fixtures include trips to Brighton and Arsenal, and home games against Chelsea and Everton
