Dance Practitioners Advocate Collective Action, Fair Compensation to Drive Growth and Development

The future of dance lies in collective action - Dr. Steve James, Veteran Dancer

In an inspiring and thought-provoking conversation led by industry leader Steve James, the importance of unity and education within the dance community took center stage over the weekend in Lagos.

Speaking at the 2024 edition of ‘Dance Na De Koko’ which came up at the National Theater Iganmu Lagos, James emphasized that the future of dance lies in collective action. He highlighted the need for dancers to move beyond individual pursuits and work together to address long-standing issues such as fair compensation, the necessity of formal education, and career advancement.

Organized by the Guild of Nigerian Dance Practitioners, Lagos Chapter, the panel session at the event showcased veteran dance professionals across the country with conversations highlighting a significant shift in the dance world, where dancers are no longer competing in isolation but are instead acknowledging each other’s contributions, discussing prizes, and sharing experiences. This change according to the speakers signals a new era where collaboration replaces rivalry and the importance of a more supportive and united community.

Also, the necessity of formal education and certification for dancers was also a major topic of discussion. Despite initial skepticism from some, panelists agreed that education is key to career advancement in the field. Dancers were encouraged to pursue educational opportunities and acquire certificates to solidify their position within the industry.

“We must value ourselves and our work,” said James. “Fair pay and recognition are not just ideals; they are achievable goals, but it will take collective effort to make that happen. The future of dance depends on us coming together, sharing our knowledge, and advocating for better compensation.”

The discussion also touched on the financial challenges faced by dancers. Many spoke about the high costs of participating in events, the difficulties of making a living, and the pressing need for better pay structures. The panel emphasized that these issues could be solved if dancers unite to advocate for themselves and each other.

While the conversation recognized the importance of social media in the dance community, the panelists agreed that more serious discussions and formal gatherings were necessary to address pressing issues. They called for an organized meeting where dancers could come together to discuss pricing, compensation, and education.

“Professional development is key to the sustainability of our careers,” James continued. “Certificates, insurance, and ongoing education are non-negotiable in the evolving landscape of the dance industry.”
