CHSR Reaffirms Commitment to Democracy, demand re-enforced protection for new Speaker

The Centre for Human and Socio-economic Rights (CHSR) urges support for the newly elected Speaker, Rt. Hon. Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, and calls for protection of democratic values in Lagos State.

The Centre for Human and Socio-economic Rights (CHSR) has reiterated its commitment to upholding democracy and protecting the independence of the legislative arm of government in Lagos State.

In a press conference held on Thursday, in Lagos, CHSR President, Comrade Alex Omotehinse, emphasized that the choice of leadership in the Lagos State House of Assembly (LAHA) should remain a prerogative of the members, calling for unwavering support for the newly elected Speaker, Rt. Hon. Mojisola Lasbat Meranda.

Omotehinse, while addressing the ongoing leadership issues in LAHA, stated, “It is imperative to say that we are not unmindful of the fact that Lagos State House of Assembly is a creation of the Nigerian Constitution with the prerogative to operate within rules binding on members of the house.”

He further urged all stakeholders to demand protection for the new Speaker, particularly in light of recent tensions following the January 13, 2025, removal of the previous Speaker, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa.

Reflecting on the constitutional rights of the LAHA members, Omotehinse highlighted that the decision to change leadership in the House was a democratic reflection of the will of the majority, a right afforded to elected representatives.

He said, “The change in leadership by the overwhelming majority of the members of the house is indeed a reflection of how elected representatives should assert themselves within the purview of separation of powers which is a key attribute of democracy.”

Omotehinse further explained that any attempt to overturn this leadership change would undermine the essence of democracy pointing out the importance of unity within the House, urging members to back the new Speaker, who is the first woman in over fifty years to hold the position in Lagos State.

“Let Rt. Hon. Mojisola Lasbat Meranda being the first woman to be chosen as speaker of LAHA… we strongly believe that her choice is a good omen that would deepen inclusivity, transparency, and democratic freedom in Lagos State,” he added.

The CHSR also condemned the efforts to reinstate Obasa, given the corruption allegations that had tainted his tenure. Omotehinse strongly stated, “It would be a monumental act of treachery for Rt. Hon. Obasa to return as speaker with the barrage of allegations against his person.”

As the Lagos House of Assembly resumes full legislative activities after over three weeks of disruption, CHSR has called on all members to remain focused on their duties. “Democracy must not be trampled or surrendered,” Omotehinse concluded, urging for the protection of the majority’s will and the legitimate choice of leadership.
