Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has expressed doubts over the ability of Michael Carrick and Liam Rosenior to win the Premier League title as managers of Manchester United and Chelsea respectively.

Carrick was appointed by Manchester United in January on a short-term deal that runs until the summer, while Chelsea handed Rosenior a six-year contract to replace Enzo Maresca at Stamford Bridge.

Speaking on Monday Night Football, Carragher insisted that neither coach has what it takes to guide their teams to league glory.

“Man United cannot win the league with Michael Carrick and I don’t believe Chelsea can also win the league with Liam Rosenior as a manager,” Carragher said.

According to the former England international, Premier League success is usually driven by elite-level managers with exceptional qualities.

“You have to be special when you look at the managers that have won the league,” he added.

“There’s always something special about 99 per cent of them and that’s why I don’t see Michael Carrick or Liam Rosenior at Chelsea doing it.”

Carragher’s comments have sparked debate among football fans, particularly given Carrick’s interim status at United and Chelsea’s long-term commitment to Rosenior as they look to rebuild and challenge for major honours
