The rise of TikTok trends and internet slang has prompted the Cambridge Dictionary to expand its online edition with more than 6,000 new entries in the past year, including buzzwords such as “skibidi,” “delulu,” and “tradwife.”
Many of the new additions reflect how Gen Z digital culture continues to shape modern English. For those less immersed in social media, the dictionary’s sample sentences may sound puzzling.
The word skibidi gained popularity through the bizarre YouTube series Skibidi Toilet, which features human heads emerging from toilets. Now, expressions like “that wasn’t very skibidi rizz of you” have become part of online banter.
Cambridge defines skibidi as “a word that can have different meanings, such as ‘cool’ or ‘bad,’ or can be used with no real meaning as a joke.”
Another trending addition, delulu (short for delusional), is often used humorously in phrases like “I’ve entered my delulu era,” while tradwife refers to women who embrace traditional homemaking roles.
By formally recognizing these slang terms, Cambridge says it is ensuring the dictionary remains relevant to the evolving language of the internet age.
