Grammy-winning artist Burna Boy has opened up about the challenges he faced early in his career, accusing Nigerian music industry gatekeepers of trying to derail his rise to stardom.
His comments came in response to a viral video from a recent interview with veteran music executive Obi Asika, who revealed that certain figures in the Nigerian music scene deliberately tried to frustrate Burna Boy’s progress. Asika stated that Burna defied their influence and went on to achieve massive international success.
Reacting in the comment section of a blog that reposted the video on Instagram, Burna Boy confirmed the claims, saying:
“This is not even half of the story. They did everything they possibly could to break me. They are still trying their best. Lol. But all they did was create this unquenchable fire that will continue to burn them for eternity.”
Burna Boy first gained national recognition with his hit track ‘Like To Party’ from his debut album ‘L.I.F.E (Leaving an Impact for Eternity)’. However, despite the early buzz, he faced setbacks and was sidelined by the mainstream Nigerian music industry for a period.
His turning point came with the release of ‘Ye’ from the album ‘Outside’, a track that catapulted him into international stardom. His global rise reignited local interest in his music, making him one of the most sought-after artists in Africa.
Today, Burna Boy is considered Africa’s top touring artist, selling out arenas worldwide and winning accolades across continents.
