Bayelsa Governor Raises Alarm Over Alleged Plot to Destabilize State’s Peace

Governor Diri warns of political unrest and urges vigilance among security agencies and residents.

Governor Diri’s Alarm Over Political Unrest

Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has raised concerns about an alleged plot to destabilize the peace in the state. He warned that his government would not tolerate any attempt to instigate political violence. Speaking on Thursday during separate meetings with the Bayelsa Elders Council and the 37th session of the Bayelsa State Security Council, Diri called on all residents, security agencies, elders, youths, and traditional rulers to remain vigilant.

Alleged Rally and Political Group Could Stir Unrest

Diri specifically mentioned a planned mega rally and the inauguration of a political group loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike. He believes these actions could incite unrest in Bayelsa. “We will resist any attempt to import the Rivers State political crisis into Bayelsa. I urge security commanders to stay alert,” Diri stated.

Governor Urges Parents and Traditional Rulers to Stay Alert

The governor urged parents and traditional rulers to prevent their children and wards from being manipulated by those seeking to cause trouble. Diri emphasized that Bayelsa, the cradle of the Ijaw people, must maintain peace despite external political pressures.

Allegations Against Suspended PDP Member

Diri also alleged that a suspended member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had been recruited to sow division within the party in Bayelsa. He warned that these actions, combined with rising political tensions in Rivers State, could threaten the state’s stability.

Diri’s Call for Peace and Courage

“This is not Rivers State. Bayelsa is the cradle of every Ijaw man. I have always said that being peaceful is not cowardice. We are very courageous, and we can stand up for the truth at all times,” Diri asserted.

Lere Olayinka Responds to Allegations

In response, Lere Olayinka, the Senior Special Assistant to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory on Public Communication and New Media, dismissed Governor Diri’s claims as “shamefully baseless.” This response has only heightened political tensions in the region.

The government and security agencies continue to monitor the situation closely, as they prepare to address any threats to the peace of Bayelsa.
