The Bauchi State Police Command has issued a strong warning to the public, especially youths, against the emerging trend of climbing telecommunications masts, following a series of incidents linked to suicide attempts and political protests.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Ahmed Wakil, revealed that the command had documented three major cases in June 2025 where individuals scaled network masts across the Bauchi metropolis, citing political demands and personal grievances.
The first incident occurred on 16th June, involving 22-year-old Adamu Salisu, who climbed a mast near Kofar Dumi Primary School, demanding a phone call from Alhaji Bala Wunti to announce his gubernatorial ambition.
Just two days later, on 18th June, Usman Nanu (35) ascended the same mast to pressure Governor Bala Mohammed to declare interest in the 2027 presidential race.
The most recent case, on 29th June, involved 37-year-old Alkassim Saidu Yakubu, who climbed an MTN mast insisting that the Bauchi State Commissioner of Finance announce his gubernatorial bid.
In all cases, police officers promptly responded and safely rescued the individuals, who have since expressed remorse and will be charged under relevant laws for attempting suicide and public disturbance.
The Commissioner of Police, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, expressed deep concern over the dangerous trend, calling it reckless, unlawful, and a threat to public safety. He warned that the command will pursue legal action against anyone engaged in or inciting such acts.
The Command reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining law and order and urged residents to use lawful channels to express grievances.
