The National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Ajibola Basiru, has stated that the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has no right to interfere in the affairs of the ruling party in Rivers State.

Basiru said Wike, a former governor of Rivers State, is not a member of the APC and therefore lacks the “locus to dabble into the affairs” of the party. He made this known in a post shared on the official X handle of the APC, responding to Wike’s recent warning asking him to steer clear of Rivers State politics.

“For the avoidance of doubt, our records indicate that Minister Nyesom Wike is not a member of our Party (APC), so he lacks the locus to dabble into the affairs of our party,” Basiru stated.

The former lawmaker further explained that, as the National Secretary of the APC, he is constitutionally empowered to protect the interests of the party, its members, and its structures across the country.

“Hence, my comments regarding the affairs of the APC in Rivers State cannot be an undue interference in the affairs of Rivers State. As National Secretary, my activities cannot be confined to my home state, Osun State,” he added.

The exchange follows an earlier statement by Wike, who cautioned Basiru against commenting on political developments in Rivers State, warning him to stay out of the state’s politics.

The public back-and-forth has further highlighted growing tensions surrounding political alignments and influence in Rivers State ahead of future electoral contests.
