Atletico Madrid secured a commanding 2-0 first-leg advantage over 10-man Barcelona in their Champions League quarter-final clash on Wednesday at Camp Nou.

The match turned in Atletico’s favour when Barca goalkeeper Pau Cubarsi was sent off for fouling Giuliano Simeone, leaving the hosts with 10 men.

Julian Alvarez curled home a free-kick to give Atletico the lead, and Alexander Sorloth doubled the advantage with 20 minutes remaining, putting Diego Simeone’s side in a strong position ahead of next Tuesday’s second leg in Madrid.

Atletico, who have yet to lift the Champions League trophy despite reaching the 2014 and 2016 finals, now have momentum heading into the return fixture. Antoine Griezmann told Movistar, “We have things to improve and learn from… we’re happy for the win but there’s a long way to go. We’re very far from the semis, we’re 90 or more minutes away… we’re confident but keeping our feet on the ground.”

Barca, semi-finalists last season, face a tough task in overturning the deficit. Defender Ronald Araujo said, “It will be tough there but if anyone can do it, it’s us. We’ve got great players, quality, personality — we will look for the comeback.”

The match featured several notable moments: Marcus Rashford, on loan from Manchester United, was a constant threat for Barcelona on the left flank, while teenage star Lamine Yamal caused problems on the right despite heavy defensive attention from Atletico.

Barca had early chances, including a disallowed goal from Rashford, but Atletico capitalised on a critical defensive error by Cubarsi, which led to the first goal. Sorloth’s second strike came against the run of play, finishing off a cross from Matteo Ruggieri.

The result marks Barca’s first home defeat since Camp Nou reopened in November 2025 and gives Simeone his first win at the stadium in his 14-year tenure with Atletico.

Next week’s second leg at Wanda Metropolitano will determine which team advances to the semi-finals, with Barcelona needing a strong comeback to overturn the two-goal deficit.
