“At Least I’ve Lifted Trophies” – Onana Fires Back at Matic After Harsh Criticism

Manchester United goalkeeper André Onana claps back at Nemanja Matic’s scathing remarks, reminding the former midfielder of his silverware success.

Manchester United goalkeeper André Onana has issued a fiery response to ex-teammate Nemanja Matic, who recently labelled him “one of the worst goalkeepers in United’s history.” Onana didn’t hold back, pointing to his trophy-winning career as a counterpunch to the former midfielder’s harsh words.

Speaking to reporters after United’s training session on Thursday, Onana addressed the criticism directly:

“People are quick to forget. But let me remind them—I’ve played in a Champions League final, won league titles, domestic cups, and I’ve lifted trophies. Not everyone can say the same,” the Cameroonian shot-stopper said with a calm but pointed tone.

“Football is a team sport, and mistakes happen. But to say I’m the worst? That’s disrespectful. I focus on the pitch, on improving. Let others talk.”

Onana, who joined Manchester United from Inter Milan in 2023, helped the Italian side reach the Champions League final and won multiple trophies with Ajax, including Eredivisie titles and domestic cups. Since arriving at Old Trafford, he’s faced scrutiny for inconsistent performances but has also produced standout saves, especially in tight Premier League fixtures.

Matic, who had a relatively trophy-less spell during his time with Manchester United, ignited debate earlier in the week by stating that Onana was “painful to watch” and questioning the club’s decision to sign him.

The goalkeeper’s response has split opinion on social media. While some fans applauded Onana for standing his ground, others urged him to “let his gloves do the talking” with stronger performances on the pitch.

With crucial fixtures ahead, including the FA Cup semi-final and a potential European spot still in reach, all eyes will now be on how Onana handles the pressure—both on and off the field.
